My Book club collectively decided Weyward by Emilia Hart was a successful book pick of the month! Several things made this book a great choice for October. I'm listing them here, which will probably giving you many reasons to pick up this book before Fall ends. I'm also including a few discussion questions to ponder because Weyward was full of thought provoking details.

Weyward by Emilia Hart was just the right amount of Halloween for my Mom's Book club. The story is based on generations of witches so there was bound to be some mysterious things, crows, and magic. And there was! The mysterious factor held my attention and kept me guessing. The character development and multiple story lines made the book captivating, as well. I enjoyed diving into each era and continued to guess how Violet, Kate and Altha were connected.

The connection to nature and the familial ties were also elements I enjoyed. There were a few spells and the protection of crows were definitely witchy! I really liked each woman's survival instincts. Generation after generation the women were connected through mementos like the bee brooch, the cottage and the journal. I found that I really liked this part of the book!

My book club wanted a book that fit the current season. We wanted Fall, Halloween, spooky season vibes. I think a book to fit the season plays into why I enjoyed it. I love watching spooky movies leading up to Halloween but reading a book, where your imagination can dive right into each setting, even better! I highly recommend always picking a book to fit a season.

Weyward is also Historical Fiction, which is a genre several of the ladies in my book club enjoy. Altha's timeline is set in 1619. Back then women who were thought to be witches were tried by a jury and potential hung. Witchcraft was a major crime in this era and the accused were treated brutely. Violet's story, set in 1619 during World War II gives insight to a privileged lifestyles and societal expectation of that time. In this era witchcraft and anything out of character was frowned upon; a disgrace.

From multiple timelines to family ties, Weyward was a great book to read during spooky season.

Discussion Question for Weyward

1. What characteristics or qualities do Altha, Violet and Kate share? Do you see any common themes in their personalities?

2. How has views of witches and witchcraft changed from 1619, 1942, 2019, to today?

3. What do you think of the title of the book? What does Weyward resemble?

4. How did the male characters in Weyward show up? How did the author portray the men?

5. How did Violet's little brother show up for her in the end?

6. If Altha wouldn't have left a key to where her journal was hiding how would this have changed Violet's life? How would Kate's life change?

These were the main questions my book club discussed but there's plenty out there that would be great conversation starters.

If you'd like to check out the book I read it on Kindle.
